The Victorian AI Hub will contract more generation than it uses: we will build and contract more new generation, storage and transmission than the Hub consumes. Victoria's grid ends up stronger with the Hub than without it.
The numbers: 265 km of underground HVDC cable. 1.5-2 GW of transmission capacity. +3.1 GW more renewable hosting capacity for Victoria - a lift of over 25%. ~220 MW of peak demand avoided on the hottest days.
The Hub sits beside the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub - one of the largest batteries in the world - and connects at one of the strongest points on Victoria's grid. Our electricity comes from Victoria's declared Renewable Energy Zones, starting with wind and solar that today is spilled because it can't get to market, firmed with off-site batteries.
On extreme summer days the Hub cuts its own peak demand by around 220 MW through water-based evaporative cooling - roughly the demand of 90,000 homes running air-conditioning - and its AI workloads can flex down when the grid is strained. Under the national framework endorsed by National Cabinet in August 2026, that is exactly what large data centres will be required to do. We designed for it from day one.
We pay the full cost of our own grid connection, and we add more supply than we take. New generation, new storage and new transmission - paid for by the project, not by consumers - puts downward pressure on power prices for everyone.
We are the team behind the Syncline Community Cable - a 265 km underground high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line linking the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub at Plumpton to north-west Victoria near Jeffcott. About 100 km runs beneath the Calder Freeway median; the remaining 165 km crosses private farmland - underground, so paddocks stay farmable and skylines stay clear.
It is transmission built on a community-partnership model: around 60 landholders along the route have signed or are finalising agreements, and every landholder gains a stake in the project through a Community Trust, with a share of distributions funding local community projects chosen by a committee of landholders and independent members.
For the grid, the Cable carries 1.5 to 2 GW - lifting Victoria's renewable hosting capacity by more than 3.1 GW (a rise of over 25%) and improving NSW interconnector flows by more than 2.3 GW, so more of the wind and solar already built in the north-west actually reaches Melbourne.
